During November, we had a flurry of activity as APA students traversed the city taking field trips to learn about various career pathways: from a respected engineering school in
Evanston, IL to the FabTech expo downtown. The students also participated in a Job Shadow Day, giving them the opportunity to spend a day at one of our partners.
Here is a quick recap of the places we visited:

On November 16th 26 students visited Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering. Students were greeted by Dr. Steve Carr, Dean of the School of Engineering. Dean Carr gave an informative overview of the history of engineering and then escorted them to the machining lab (similar to APA's lab!) where Northwestern students were using various cutting edge technologies. Later, Polytech students had a Q&A session with several engineering students followed by a tour of the campus.
FabTech

On November 17th 11 APA Juniors attended Fabtech, North America's largest metal forming, fabricating, and welding expo. Upon arrival to McCormick Place, students were treated to a robotics demonstration, then were whisked away to main floor lead by Industry Mentors for a tour showcasing some of the most innovative companies. Students spoke with different presenters about their new products and were able to observe several business negotiations. Students loaded on to the bus home with several souvenirs each, eager to tell their peers about what they had learned.

On December 3rd, 24 APA students visited Johnson Controls Compression Shop in Wheeling, IL. General Manager Michael Bentley hosted students and gave them an overview of the organization along with a tour of the plant to demonstrate the various products that Johnson Control produces. Following the plant tour, students were treated to pizza and a movie about the history of Johnson Controls. APA students gleefully boarded the bus taking home their Johnson Controls gift bags.
Job Shadow Day
On November 30th, 15 partners hosted 18 students for a Job Shadow day where students could apply what they learned in class in action in the real world. Thank you to all of our partners and students for your participation. It was a great success!
